What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are a set of specific factors that Google considers important in a webpage's overall user experience. They are an official Google ranking factor, meaning pages that score highly will generally rank better in search results than slower, clunkier competitors.

The Big Three Metrics

Google focuses on three main pillars of the user experience:

  • Loading (LCP): Largest Contentful Paint measures how long it takes for the main content (usually a hero image or large text block) to finish loading. Aim for < 2.5 seconds.
  • Interactivity (FID/INP): First Input Delay (transitioning to Interaction to Next Paint) measures how responsive your site feels when a user first clicks or taps something.
  • Visual Stability (CLS): Cumulative Layout Shift measures how much the page jumps around as it loads. A high CLS means a user might accidentally click the wrong button because the layout suddenly shifted. Aim for < 0.1.

Mobile vs. Desktop

Google uses Mobile-First Indexing. This means that Google predominantly uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking. Therefore, your mobile performance score is far more important than your desktop score. If your mobile score is in the red, fixing it should be your top priority.

How to Improve Your Score

Improving Core Web Vitals often requires technical optimizations. Common fixes include:

  • Compressing and converting images to WebP formats.
  • Implementing a CDN (Content Delivery Network).
  • Minifying CSS/JS and deferring non-critical scripts.
  • Using proper server caching.
